Years ago, when I was doing a lot of online dating, I was getting frustrated by all of the life force I was spending on folks who were ultimately the wrong match. I remember telling one date a truly amazing story of synchronicity from my time living abroad. He shrugged his shoulders, unimpressed. “Seriously?” I said to him. “You don’t find that story even a little bit magical?” Not really, he replied.

One day, I noticed a wishbone on my kitchen counter. I had pulled it from a rotisserie chicken days before. Since it was clean and dry (and ready for the wishing to begin!) I put it in my bag. 

I figured, if I met someone who felt like a match for my spirit (if they believed in magic, hello!) if they would appreciate a girl with a chicken bone in her bag, well then maybe we’ve got something here.

It sat in my bag for so long I forgot about it. Until I was at a storytelling conference in San Francisco. 

There was an “unconference” portion of the day where people split off into small groups based on specific interests. But I wandered around, lost, not quite sure where I fit in or where my people were. As I panicked that I would never find my place, I noticed another woman was wandering aimlessly too. We found each other in the center of the room and started chatting. Suddenly, she looked at me with wide eyes, “Do you believe in magic?” she asked me. “Yes!” I responded.

And then I remembered the wishbone. “Look!” I exclaimed as I pulled it out of my bag. “I vowed to only bring this out if I met someone worthy of the story attached to it. I think that’s you!” And I proceeded to tell her the magical wishbone story I had saved for just the right person.

I want to remind you that the people that are your people, that are a match for you and your spirit, are out there. That if you can fly your special freak flag, that’s how your people find you. We aren’t going to be for everyone. But that’s what makes it so exciting when we do find the people we love.
